River Conditions

There's really not much new to report on the Owyhee River. We're a couple weeks into January and things are looking good. Weather's been relatively warm (even with the snow dump) and shelf ice hasn't been much of an issue. Afternoon temperatures have been into the mid 40's and water's open from the dam on down to Snively.

We're smack dab into the Midge fishing part of the year so look for more heads up in the slower sections -- especially as evening temperatures rise above the freezing point. Sunny, bright afternoons are going to provide the best top water opportunities. Try to get out during the heat of the day (between noon and about 3:00 pm), pay attention to the 'dimple' rises, and work methodically up the open banks.

Midges and BWOs will pop through the peak of the afternoon as conditions shift, water temps increase and the sun hits the surface. Temperatures aren't necessarily consistent riverwide so you may have to move around to find fish working. Generally speaking, the water will be warmer up higher through the winter months. That said, you may find a bit more activity above the tunnel.

As is typical for this time of year, long leaders and light tippets are a must. My recommendation is to go with at least 12 feet and size down to 5 and 6 X to get the proper turnover.

Keep your drag to a minimum by stacking your cast and be sure to approach fish slowly and with intent. By that I mean, pick your fish, observe, target, then pursue. Don't just crash and cast. The water's low and slow so every movement will push a wake.
