Owyhee River Fishing Report

There have been a few changes on the Owyhee as of late. The flows were bumped sometime between March 07 – 08 and are now steady at about 140 CFS. This isn’t much of an increase, but it will stir things up a bit and probably put the fishing off for a few days.  Things should be back in fishing shape by the weekend.

Unfortunately, I’m not certain how this will affect the Skwala hatch. With the influx of warmer water (from the bottom of the dam) it could really get them going…or put them down. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In any event, I'll be on the river over the weekend and will update the reports as soons as I get in.

In the meantime, we should see BWO and Midge fishing bounce back in no time. The hatches are getting more consistent and heads are definitely up.

Warm afternoons are your best bet so there's no need to get out on the water at the crack of dawn. Look for fish sipping tight inside on protected banks. Fish hold in some strange places this time of year so scour the banks before you jump right in.

Once you're on the water, look for subtle 'dimple' rises. Fish are still moving slow so work through your run methodically and be sure not to make too much of a ruckus getting from place to place. When the flows are low it's easy to push a wake and bust fish. Keep stealth in mind for best results.

Special Note On 2010 License Fees

The People’s Republic of Oregon raised license fees for 2010. A year tag now goes about $106 and a day is around $17.

Also, if you pick up your license at the Owyhee Grocery Market (the rock store), be sure to take your check book with you. If you use your debit or credit card, they’ll ding you for an extra $4.25.

Bi-Mart in Ontario does not charge the 'extra fees' so that may be a better option.
