Big Wood River Fly Fishing Report

The Big Wood River is in great shape right now and fishing weather's been fantastic - not too cold. Flows are perfect for getting around and Midges are popping!

With miles and miles of open water to fish, you really can't beat this as an early season option. We hit this stream a couple of times every March and it never disappoints!

Your best access is going to be between Hailey and Ketchum this time of year. If you're looking for options, take a pair of snow shoes with you, park it next to the river, and get moving. The scenery is outstanding and the fishing isn't bad either.

Look for 'pods' of fish stacked up in slower moving flats below riffles. If you don't find what you're looking for keep moving. Typically the Midges get going in mid-afternoon. Noon to about 3:00 PM is your prime window.

Once things slow down up top, nymphing will definitely produce. Just remember, it’s going to fish a little different than it does in the warmer months. Look for fish holding in slower and slightly deeper water.

Energy conservation is critical in lean times so work the water methodically and look in the unlikely nooks and crannies. Likewise, be sure to get fish to hand quickly and release the same way.
