River Report

The Big Wood's in good shape these days. Flows are decent (low and clear) and have been stable through winter season. Conditions are prime time for January and there's a lot of open water with afternoon temps up into the mid to upper 30's.

If you're up for the drive, you can defintely bet on some solitude (and probably some decent fishing) this time of year. That said, check the road conditions before you make your trip. We've been getting some snow lately and driving conditions have been hit or miss.

That said, look for your best opportunities to be during the warmest parts of the day. You may have to prospect (or nymph a bit) early and late in the afternoon, but these guys arent terribly selective. As long as water temps are above 38 degrees, you should be able to find fish willing to play.

Hatches have been a little inconsistent with the onset of winter but fishing has been decent on the warming trends (like this week). Look for Midges to take priority on the surface as we get further into the December.

As mentioned, if things are quiet up top, you can always get down and dirty with a variety of attractor style nymphs. My 'go-to' Big Wood late season nymph rig is the Copper John with a BH San Juan trailer (deadly)! These will produce as long as the water temperature holds and fish remain active.
