2012 Changes at The Trout Lie (aka Happy New Year)

Mission Statement...What the Hell Is That?

Whether proprietors admit it or not, there is an extensive learning curve to fly fishing. To be proficient, an angler must embrace the journey -- spend hours on the river, learn to read water, understand fish behavior, hatch cycles, learn successful patterns, and focus on repetition. Fly fishing is a ‘bottom up’ competency.

Fishing the South Fork of the Boise at 300 CFS

We're getting into 'that' time of year on the South Fork of the Boise. Flows are down to 300 CFS and the river's about a quarter of it's 'summer size'. Fishing can be fantastic through late summer/early fall, but you'll have to change your approach.

Steve Zerza's Numbers on Boise River Flows

I'm not really one to piggy back blog sites and take the 'yeah, what he said' approach, but our friend Steve Zerza crunched some numbers and put together an interesting bit of data and information related to 2011 spring runoff and the effect it's currently having on the Boise River system.

Steve's continual effort to preserve and protect the Boise River is certainly appreciated. Likewise, his insights and perspectives are always welcome at the Trout Lie.

The river's seen far worse in recent history and just as with every previous flood, the river, its quality of fishing, and pleasing scenery will recover in short order (and by short order I don't mean this month...but probably sooner than later).

Common Tips for Spring Fishing Success

Spring fishing is always a bit of a gamble. 'Hit or Miss' is the February and March mantra and a slight shift in weather can make all the difference -- for the good or the bad. If you plan on heading out be sure and understand the 'general approach'. Here's what we recommend:

What's the Worst That Could Happen?

Identifying Prime Fall Fishing Structure

I received an email recently requesting further clarification on fall river structure terminology. As it turns out, this is a great topic for a quick post.

In the day to day rigmarole of balancing fly orders, updates, and the like I often lose sight of the fact that while many may enjoy the site content, some have no idea what I’m talking about.  That said, here’s a crash course on our site terminology.

A Few Tips for Fall Fishing Success

Fall fishing can be a little frustrating at times (sometimes downright irritating). If you're getting a little red in the face due to refusals and overall tough times on the river, here are a few quick tips to get you on track. These are the Trout Lie 'cornerstones' to successful fall fishing.
